Week 0 Daily Card Part 2

Just in case you have forgotten, you will need:

  • 3x5 cards

  • A pencil or pen

  • Your calendar

Now, on the first card (not your Daily Card), take a moment to write a single sentence or word that encapsulates why you are making this commitment to writing practice. It doesn’t have to be profound, but it does have to be as true as you can make it. Under this statement, write the amount of time you would like to allot for writing practice per day. There will be several parts of writing practice, so make sure that it is longer than five minutes. I would suggest beginning with fifteen, but you know what you can commit to for four weeks.

Now, on the back of the card, make seven boxes with a designation for each day of the week. In each of the boxes, write down the specific time you have chosen for writing practice on each of those days. You may not want to write seven days per week, so on days that you won’t be writing, make a note of that too. Writing once a week for a year is fifty-two writing sessions. If you manage to write two hundred words per week, you will have written 10,400 words. That is a sizable pile of words. Consistency is the key to practice, so commit to what you can do. For the sake of this course, I will be providing you with seven prompts per week to accommodate those who choose to write daily.

On a second card, your Daily Card (which you will fill out each day for use the next day at the beginning of writing practice), write tomorrow’s date, the time you will be writing, and anything you need to remember to make that happen (pack your writing stuff in a bag so you have it while waiting in line at the DMV, hire a babysitter, get the dog a new bone). Leave the back of the card blank. Now, tuck the card somewhere you will see it.

Week 0 Daily Card, begin each writing practice by filling out a new card Daily Card for the next day with:

  • tomorrow’s date

  • tomorrow’s writing time

  • things you need to remember to make it happen
